Fleeting summer ~ time for new Sam Adams beer

A few weeks ago, we bought a case of Sam Adams Summer Ale for a party. The box is a summery golden yellow with old New England wooden boats with sails on it.

Sam Adams Jim Koch’s text reads:

"Complex yet refreshing, this tangy American wheat ale features a slight citrus note. Brewed with malted wheat, lemon zest and Grains of Paradise, a once-forgotten but favorable African brewing spice. The perfect drink for a warm summer day."

So, there are two interesting elements of this box design. The first is the choice of boat. The sails are meant to draw out images of modern sailing, even though the people in the boats don’t look like they’re out shooting a music video or competing in a race. I want to explore the historical accuracy of the boats depicted here and will post anything I find out later.

The second is the more obvious of the two: Grains of Paradise. This a proper known apparently, deserving capital letters. Indeed.

It’s interesting to see how you can take a theme like "revolutionary beer" and alter it with a few very strong images to give your summer beer a feel just like everything else that people sell with paradise.
