President George H.W. Bush’s pool boy speaks out
San Francisco Gate has the story here. Nice quote from the article:
He’s paid $9 an hour — "pennies thrown at my feet," relative to the wealth all around him, he says.
The wages in Maine are so cheap compared to what the wealthy pack in their wallets. It’s a shame too because Mainers are really amazing [...]
Unknown Canada vs. Not Obviously Canada
I really love Canada and try to travel there at least once a year if I can. It’s always refreshing to have different forms of visual stimulation as opposed to the lameitude that is American highway sprawl stimulation. Luckily, today such a visual flew south electronically. It was a web ad for [...]
Roomba® Vacuuming Robot & Lighthouse™ Review
After my post in August on the new 5th-generation (500 series) Roomba vacuum cleaning robots, I bought one to try out. So, I can now officially do a review. Two words: love it!
First off, the Roomba is almost perfect for our house. I’m vacuuming now as I type. How bad could that be? [...]
Big idea for Yahoo ~ random palms mean nothing
Yahoo has asked people to be “Big Idea Generators,” so I have one for them: get rid of the palm trees on your ad ads. What are they supposed to mean?
Then again, how exactly are you supposed to advertise advertising anyway? I’m not even going to touch on the monkey up there.
No-link ad round up ~ Campbell’s Soup, Kraft Live Active Cheese, and Citizens Ukulele Banking
Three noteworthy ads are bouncing around television this week. I have searched for copies of them online, but have had no luck yet.
First off, there’s Campbell’s soup, which is advertising their new sea salt alternatives with sea imagery apparently from this Oregon lighthouse. I’ve always felt like sodium chloride was sodium chloride, but [...]
The South’s Past, Present, and Future ~ Gardens, Guns, and Surfer Girls
About two months ago, on my way through Charlotte, North Carolina, this amazing cover of Garden&Gun magazine jumped off the newsstand at me:
This cover might surprise everyone but the Southerners reading this post, but the magazine really is about people with guns and beautiful gardens. Some of the images within could have been taken [...]
Aqua-sprawl ~ will Federation Island also have 11 time zones?
Shame on Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat for proving, once again, that many architects aren’t afraid to stoop to doing jobs that (most) landscape architects and planners know better not to do. He’s designing an 865-acre (350-hectare) project for a major Russian development on the Black Sea. It’s a Russia-shaped infill island [...]
Medicine marketers ~ apply directly to the brain
People are surprised that HeadOn is selling EXTREMELY WELL (up 234% according to this temporarily-available article) in spite of its annoying “Apply directly to the forehead” commercials. The company did soften, and multiply in chorus, the voices on the repetitive tag line, but the ad still seems to work. Why?
Honda ~ hold on tight to everybody else’s dreams
Have you seen the latest Honda commercial with the car driving through the tunnel with the images rolling up around it? The Honda is the ultimate medium to paradise in this ad. Here it is:
I think the idea of the vision tunnel is pretty cool, but the tunnel vision of just rolling through common images [...]
How Coca Cola killed a little girl called Samantha; okay it was just her cartoon likeness, but still…
First off, welcome new subscribers. Try Rapidsea out for a few days, and you’ll notice a wide variety of things we cover from organic lemonade (today’s first post) to military recruitment. Thanks, too, to FeedBurner for pushing us to the top of the Buzz list. We meant all the nice things we [...]
