Pine Tree is to Apple Tree ~ as Anna Nicole is to Saul Steinberg (Part 2)

Where were we? Oh, yes, could it be Anna Nicole?
The image in this ad, which was taken from the February 19, 2007, issue of Globe, took me back to a small piece of Hawaiian history from an 1875 guidebook:
“The women are conspicuous in their gay dresses and wreaths of vines or flowers, and riding astride they manage their horses with masculine energy and skill, until the shades of evening put an end to their sport, or halting at some unlucky moment they are arrested for fast riding, and they end one week and begin another in the police station, unless some maka-maka (friend) steps forward with the six dollars bail which they willingly forfeit.”
This short excerpt is from The Hawaiian Guide Book, which I believe was the first comprehensive guide to the Hawaiian Islands by Henry M. Whitney. Such a title today would typically be given to a tourism guide, but this one was geared towards traders. The images portrayed began to tell a story of a Hawaii that was far less stuffy than the rapidly modernizing worlds to which they were taken.
It also makes you think that the theory about society’s conservative-to-liberal inkling is actually coming in waves: conservative-to-liberal-to-conservative-to…. Yet even today we still relate women’s abilities to male attributes, as I discussed in my post yesterday on AdForum’s “Women” focus.
Like the guidebook, Anna Nicole was engaged in trade in this image too. She was selling “smokin’-hot-status” through the use of TrimSpa. This is a piece of the text you can’t read from the image above:
Anna Nicole hotter than ever after losing 69 lbs and keeping it off for over 3 years. While ANNA achieved “smokin’-hot-status”, please do not expect your results to be as amazing.
Be Envied. [No emphasis added to the ad copy]
But don’t you dare expect the same results. You’re going to have to slay your own malnutrition and fat.
Finally, on serious note, may Anna finally be in peace.
