Somerset ~ The Elegant Coast of England to Americans
The United States and United Kingdom share the same flee-to-the-sea spirit, and Somerset County in England is no stranger to being a source of coastal inspiration. The area is known in the States mostly by name, and its cachet is being spread more widely in the States.
In the past 24 hours, I have come across two separate products that carry the Somerset name. The first I found yesterday in an arts supply store. It’s a texture style for a brand of paper:

I only have two issues with this particular “Somerset” product. First off, the paper is called Moab, the Utah town known for its beautiful red rocks, but the image is of Monument Valley on the Utah/Arizona border (150 miles apart). I had a similar issue when I noticed one time that Phoenix-based US Airways had advertised beautiful Arizona with a picture of Bryce Canyon in one of their in-plane vacation brochures. Let’s get our pictures and places straight here people.
Secondly, what kind of texture is “Somerset” and how does Somerset relate to Moab? Could there be two more different places, at least among English speaking countries?
I’ll give the rainbow a pass because if you have ever been to Monument Valley in a storm, this place invented the desert rainbow cliche.
Next up is the new Somerset line of jewelry at Tiffany and Company:

This image came in one of their promotional emails. It’s interesting in that they have chosen a cooler coast like Somerset to name their jewelry line. You’ll also notice the woven textures of the chair, hat, and sweater that mirror the bracelet. A lot of thought clearly went into this image and it makes you wonder if the women who spent the summer on Nantucket will be wearing this jewelry in New Jersey and Connecticut through the fall. The pieces are certainly beautiful.
The Tiffany website says this about the jewelry:
“Tiffany diamonds woven in sterling. Mix different metals—sterling silver and white, rose and yellow gold—to create a look that is all your own. Casual and refined, modern and elegant.”
Apart from the ones that look like a creepy golden snake, I’d say that this line is a go. If certain places deserve their cachet, Tiffany has done it for Somerset. Legion paper needs to revisit the high deserts of Utah for their inspiration.
