There is no gastrointestinal distress in paradise ~ with Dannon Activia yogurt

Following along with the no-herpes-in-paradise post, here’s one for Dannon’s Activia, which promises no constipation either:

Click on the still and it will take you to the full commercial on their website activia.com.

I had some strange feeling when I heard the name of the bacteria “Bifidus regularis” that maybe that isn’t the real scientific name of the bacteria. I thought that hey may have even cultivated their own genetic variant. My close circle laughed at my conspiracy theory, but a quick Wikipedia search later I was proven right! Check this out from the Wikipedia article:

B. animalis, strain number DN 173 010, is used worldwide as a probiotic in the product Activia™, produced by the Danone company (known as Dannon in the US). The company uses different trade names in different countries : Bifidus Digestivum (UK), Bifidus Regularis (US and Mexico), Bifidobacterium Lactis or B.L. Regularis (Canada), Bifidus Essensis (Germany, Netherlands, Romania and Austria), Bifidus Activo (Spain) and Bifidus Actiregularis (Argentina, Chile, Italy and Russia).

Couldn’t they come up with other ideal places to market their products with? And will Rapidsea ever become the PerezHilton of celebrity digestion?

If you’re interested, the real scientific name is “Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis DN173010.”

If, after your 14-day money-back trial of Activia, you need further help, a MiraLAX commercial also had some nice escape shots for your constipation, but I haven’t been able to find it online. At least their homepage has a nice happy meadow shot with Photoshopped people to make us smile.

UPDATE (September 29, 2007): I tried the Activia vanilla flavor.  It is actually pretty good.  It’s very similar in taste I think to the Yoplait french vanilla, but maybe a little less creamy.  It’s worth a try.  I’m still not sure if they did additional genetic modifications to the bacteria to help it earn its trademark.  Leave a comment if you know anything.

There’s a website, http://www.bifidusdigestivum.com , which lists a lot of information about Bifidus Regularis, (and the various other things it’s being called).
