Wal-Mart’s somebody allows nobody to take everybody’s credit for strip mall ad campaign

Some mornings the posts write themselves.  I’ve already had a barrage of images that came flying at me that somehow seem relevant to each other.  So from Wal-Mart to Tiffany and Co., we’re off again on another Rapidsea day.

Wal-Mart is in the advertising news again with further talk about their ad campaign that I wrote about last week on their Orlando strip mall destination.  The ad world has been congratulating itself on Wal-Mart’s "creative success," and in an attempt to give credit where credit is due, no one seems to be able to truly take the credit (temporarily free link from AdvertisingAge).

This time they’re saying that maybe a prior ad agency GSD&M, not The Martin Agency of Richmond, came up with the new slogan "Save Money. Live Better."  Then again, maybe it was Sam Walton who came up with the less distilled version "We save people money so they can live better."  Read the article now if you care about the drama of it all.

My feelings are that the ad campaign is visually very real and appealing up to the point that they rely on the beach to carry their message at the end.  They lose me there.  Living better with family does not [have to] mean spending more time at the beach.

But if we measure ads based on their sales then I’m sure this one will be great.  Of course, by this logic, bikini beer ads are also great.

You can also trust the Martin agency.  They have some lovely stock photos that they used for the "Who We Are: Clients" page of their website.  They are cars, football, and palm-tree-covered beaches:

Trust them!  They’re creative.  Unless you would rather not have stock beach images in your campaign?
