Aloha Partners says Good-bye to 700 MHz ~ ships it off to AT&T for $2.5 billion

Arstechnica is reporting that AT&T bought $2.5 billion worth of primo 700 MHz spectrum property from a group called Aloha Partners.  According to Aloha Partners site, they were "the largest owner of 700 MHz spectrum in the US."

You might think that Aloha Partners is located somewhere near Hawai’i, but it’s actually based in Providence, R.I.  You can read more about them here.

The red area in this map shows everything that AT&T now controls:

We’re talking about a humongous swath of the country and millions of people.  I’m going to guess that AT&T and Apple will be playing nice together and that this is part of their combine and conquer strategy.

[...] We reported on this way back in October and tried to understand the island spirit of the deal.  Did they also pick up the rest of the beachfront property?  Probably not.  Let’s hope not at least.  Competition good.  Unregulated monopoly bad.  That auction has topped $18.8 billion, so AT&T may have already done very good for themselves.
