AT&T to hold off on beachfront spectrum bid unless they can come up with a business launch plan

While AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson has been joining in on calling the 700 Mhz spectrum “beachfront” as mentioned in an earlier post on their purchase of largest current holdings of the spectrum from Aloha Partners, he says that AT&T will not be bidding in the upcoming auction until they see if there is an appropriate business model for them. This news comes by way of Broadband Reports.

It’s encouraging to see a company that won’t just buy something because everybody else seems to want it. Perhaps their strategy will be to let everybody else bid it up and then buy whatever company wins it after they go into receivership from the enormous purchase. I’m guessing that Google will bid and will come out on top. They seem to know exactly what their business model is.

If AT&T is not bluffing, they should probably, well, get their own model now. Unless Steve Jobs has already supplied them with their five-year plan — like Moscow did for the Republics circa ’74 — then they’re all set. Then again, if that Gphone gizmo is amazing, then everybody’s in trouble.
