Dubai developer heads for "sustainability"
Nakeel, one of the Dubai companies that we have chided for creating islands of no sustainability, has supposedly jumped on the bandwagon after a six-month review of their social, environmental, and architectural impact. See the ArabianBusiness.com article here. Are they going to head in this direction right after they finish their current mega-billion-dollar sell off? Or sooner? They still need to get a mask and snorkel before they realize what they have.
UPDATE: If you really want to get an idea of why this doubt lingers, read their Palm Jumeirah press release here. They’re going to have the home of the QE2 cruise ship (unless there’s more than one?) and a permanent Cirque du Soleil show. Why can’t they come up with their own definitions of escape and luxury instead of importing everything based on obnoxious stereotypes of places like Las Vegas, which in turn imported talent and showmanship — at least in Cirque du Soleil and Celine Dion fashion — from Quebec?
Quebec is more interesting and authentic than any of these desert farces. If you have never visited, you should go. Most of Canada is a great place to travel.
