Dubai’s Dolphins coming to you live from the Solomon Islands ~ We’re rich and we want dolphins!

In addition to the non-paradise Pacific article, there was another notable piece in The Age today about one of my favorite topics: Dubai.

The Gulf is an incredibly beautiful body of water with tons of wildlife.  It even has dolphins in it.  I was once invited to go out with some incredibly generous Emirati fishermen there to see them. But some businesspeople there want better dolphins for their water parks.  I guess the Dubai dolphins are just not as loveable as bottlenose dolphins. That’s why some people there want to import the trained models from the Solomons.

Previously, nine of 28 Solomons dolphins died when they were exported to Mexico after a heated court battle to allow the export.  Now Dubai is going to give it a shot.  Get the DC-10s ready.  We’re rich and we want dolphins!  The involved groups in the Solomons want to send up to 100 of them.  At "tens of thousands of [Australian] dollars," you’re looking at millions in profits.

The rich folks in Dubai need to reattach their heads.  Instead of lifting sand off the bottom of the Gulf and covering your own amazing wildlife up with it in the process of building islands, why don’t you put on a freaking snorkel and go look at what you have.

The Gulf there is so much more important and interesting than the desert.  I would dare say that the fish, mammals, and plants in the Gulf could become the most substantial long-term element of a tourism strategy — unless they continue destroying their habitat with ridiculous islands.  Please visit The Age article here.
