Spot the Match contest from Starwood Preferred American Express credit card

Don’t be fooled by this cheesy little Spot the Match promotional site for the American Express Starwood Preferred card:

The Starwood card offers locations and services that are lot more sophisticated than these dumbed down icons and silly beach scene would have you believe. This little contest game is kind of boring really. American Express has had better promotions than this before. But don’t let that turn you off of this card.

If you travel at all and you are becoming frequently more annoyed by the airlines mileage programs, you may be in the market for a new points-type credit card. I have been using the American Express Starwood Preferred card for several months now and really like it. It’s been great.

Its main benefit is that you can use your points at any Starwood Hotel — e.g., Sheraton, W, and Westin — without blackout dates. As long as they have a room, you can use your points. It’s not like the airlines that charge you twice as many points if you want to travel on any date you like.

The drawbacks of the card are a high interest rate (so be sure to pay it off monthly), and some merchants don’t accept American Express. Many of the advantages outweigh these limitations. For example, they actually gave me back over $100 for my first-day iPhone purchase even though they don’t even offer that sort of price protection. American Express knows how to treat its customers, unlike Bank of America. Consider the card if you’re looking for one.
