3D brain island model by Unit Seven ~ new scales for digital elevation models

I’ve been thinking a lot about scale in fake images since writing about the climber, snowboarder, and surfer in the the Pepsi Dare post.  Then along came BoingBoing.net and Unit Seven, a group out of New Zealand, who created this unique drawing:

It’s a brain that has been modeled into an island map and a 3D [...]

Alf to Debate Bill O’Reilly ~ in an aloha shirt November 30, 2007

Have you heard?  Alf is putting on his aloha shirt uniform and heading to the O’Reilly Factor tonight.

I’m not really sure what to say about this one.

Pepsi Dare for More ~ Epica d’Or award-winning ad campaign

Pepsi and their ad agency BBDO Germany GmbH of Dusseldorf have won the Epica d’Or Outdoor award among European advertisers. They won in part because of this surf wave logo image as part of their “Dare for More” campaign:

At first I wanted to cry to think that they had won for this ad alone [...]

Vintage Mahogany Speedboats ~ USPS 41-cent stamps

After veering off through a series of stamp posts here and here, this final set of "Vintage Mahogany Speedboats" surely couldn’t be left out.  Of the three posts, this set is by far the coolest.  Who would ever expect this theme?  See:

I don’t know why, but I’m feeling very James Bond all of the sudden.  [...]

Marvel Super Heroes ~ USPS 41-cent stamps of the Silver Surfer and Sub-Mariner

The US Postal Service has had a good decade-long track record of producing some interesting stamps.  I remember a time when people would complain about how boring US stamps and currency were compared to other countries’.
In my opinion, the Looney Toons stamps were some of the first to really break out and allow us to [...]

Pacific Lighthouses ~ USPS 41-cent stamps

The lighthouses of the Pacific usually don’t get as much airtime as those of New England, but the US Postal Service has a series of stamps with photos of their western counterparts (click to enlarge):

The lighthouses shown are the Diamond Head Lighthouse in Hawail, the Five Finger Lighthouse in Alaska, the Grays Harbor Lighthouse in [...]

Escola ~ carnivale with or without the Argentinean Ford Ecosport party vehicle

If Marshall McLuhan was right that the medium is the message, this commercial for the Ford Ecosport from Argentina means that this medium to paradise is the paradise itself:

Find more videos like this on www.truveo.com.

Essentially, the guy goes into a used car dealership and buys a mobile party machine with carnivale dancers.  The whole time [...]

Boston Logan Intl. Airport’s Terminal B Airmall ~ Get your pet to the beach or just shop and dine

If you’re a staunch animal rights supporter, you may be appalled by this image:

But come on, despite the anthropomorphism and beach overkill, this dog is cute.  What’s strange is that this is a "Shop & Dine Guide," but spends two folds of the brochure talking about tips for traveling with your pet.
And even though they [...]

Gizmodo: ‘Inflatable Bikini Life Jacket Harnesses The Life-Saving Power of Boobs’

How did I miss this one?  Oh yeah, I was away for ten days with my mom who is getting ready to have a mastectomy.  This will make her laugh.
Read all about the bikini life jacket and see the other half here at Gizmodo.

Rapidsea vocabulary exercise: ‘hoon’ and ‘pinniped’

First up, this article from Australia popped up yesterday: “Police on trail of beach hoons.”  I had no idea what a “hoon” was, but the context provided only a few hints.  Well, after a quick Google definition search extensive research to firm up the definition, “hoon” ends up meaning “a loud, obnoxious person.”  Anyway, the [...]
