‘World’s remotest island’ to get high-tech health care assistance from IBM and Beacon Equity

You may never have heard of Tristan da Cunha, and it is for that reason that you can probably imagine that they don’t have access to the very best medical care in the world.  Now, however, what is known as the ‘world’s remotest island,’ located over 1,600 miles southwest of Cape Town, is getting pro bono medical help from a group of business and civic partners in the form of medical equipment and satellite connections to access doctors and health information.  The group consists of IBM, Beacon Equity Partners, Medweb, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and the Government of Tristan da Cunha.  Read more here.

Tristan recently celebrated its 500th anniversary.  The island used to be accessible via the RMS Saint Helena, but now arrangements must be made with research and shipping vessels to visit Tristan.  Even then, choppy waters can jeopardize a landing at one of the islands.
