Worst ad of 2007 ~ the guy pretending to hold on to the invisible hand that he pushed over the cliff

Here’s a sendoff into the weekend.  What?  You didn’t hear?  The year is over.  The worst ad (with the worst timing) of the year is in.  Check out this guy:

20071116Cigar500CapitalismvsCommunism

Did they forget that the world’s largest country is still communist and has stopped buying our debt to prop up our currency?  Did they also forget that the little island home of their cigars happens to be communist?

I’m assuming that those are pre-embargo cigars, right, since there is no free market to be had for ordinary Cuban cigars.  Certainly this chest waxer doesn’t venture into the black market.

Then there’s the timing of it all.  This is the guy that pushed the credit market over the white cliffs of Dover and now is pretending to hold onto the invisible hand just long enough to say that he tried to save it.  He can’t wait to get home and start smoking a fat one thanks to the fact that he sold off his risk six months ago.

These babies are shipped from a duty free zone in Canada and supposedly offer "guaranteed delivery in the USA."

Markets fail, as do ads.  This one was in The Cigar Report insert of the Trader Monthly November/December (yes, "monthly") issue.

Do you not realize that Russia, the largest country in the world, isn’t communist?

Nor is the second largest country, Canada.

And the only way to continue to dominate communism is to buy things from Communist nations.

There are different ways to define the largest country. It is China, by population.

You might dominate communism economically by buying from communist countries, but you also allow corrupt political systems to syphon off wealth from the people they claim to protect. So, in many ways, by supporting a capitalist structure within a communist nation you might actually be prolonging the oppression. It requires more than just free-flowing iPods to free a people. You have to rebuild governance from the bottom up.
