Floating data centers

ars technica is reporting on floating data centers.  Essentially, a company called International Data Security is going to retrofit old ships to serve as data centers with ocean-water cooling.

I have to admit that I’m skeptical.  Even keeping little HVAC screws from puncturing the roofing membrane of an ordinary data center is hard enough.  Using salt water to cool the place seems like a difficult task.  But, they do say that you can protect your data from natural disasters in this PDF.  However, if they really do predict large decreases in the costs of cooling and real estate, they might be on to something.
