Smile Train ~ Tropical Charity
When it comes to heart-warming charities whose impact is immediately obvious with two simple photos, it doesn’t get any better than The Smile Train. They are "The World’s Leading Cleft Charity."
It’s an amazing cause, but I’m worried a bit that they’re using the same tropical-address-label fundraising efforts as everybody else (click to enlarge):

Yes, these are address labels that are supposed to sit next to you on your desk so that you reach for them when you pay the bills. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll also send them a check too. Apart from the fact that more and more people are paying bills online instead of through the mail, these labels don’t stand out. Three-quarters of them are tropical fish and only one quarter actually refer to The Smile Train.
Now, I know that not everybody would be comfortable putting The Smile Train on things like their tax payments sent to IRS. We can’t go spreading joy to those tax payment processors — even though I have been known to take those little smiley face stickers I get in other junk mail and put them on my quarterly payments. But there surely must be something better than tropical fish. Why not just the little train logo with no words? That’s cute and inoffensive.
Let’s skip the mail altogether and just donate to them here at their site. They say that "100% of your donation goes toward programs."
