Windows Seven ~ beach ready in 2009?
According to APC, the rumor is out that this is a screenshot of the upcoming WIndows 7, which may be released as early as next year (larger size available at their site):

If you are going to let an image of your upcoming product leak out onto the web, or if you even think that one might get leaked from a member of your team, at least make it a compelling and memorable one. This stock wallpaper image is as bad as any of the tackiest pop up or banner ads for screensavers and erectile dysfunction drugs. I think of Leonardo Dicaprio with knife wounds looking for batteries instead of what should be a vision of functional and desirable beauty. Where’s the limit?
Not only that, but it looks like a version of OS X Leopard with a magnifying effect for people with bad eyesight. Is the MS development team sight impaired? Where’s the innovation? Does it always have to be under the hood?
Of course, this could have been on anyone’s computer, and maybe that person chose the image herself/himself. But maybe Microsoft could dismantle the wallpaper function until a product goes live, leaving a standard image in its place — one that screams “can’t wait!”
Of course, Microsoft has a history of sticking too close to the beach and not close enough to the end consumer. Both of those posts are worth a read if you want to know why I think that Microsoft can’t think outside of their plastic container.
