So. California Fires ~ Right Blog / Left Blog Visions

It’s interesting to see the difference in how a big left-wing blog represents the Southern California fires on their front page compared to a big right-wing blog.  Here’s Arianna Huffington’s Huffington Post:

And here’s Matt Drudge’s Drudge Report:

Which one is being more alarmist and playing with people’s emotions?  Which one is more honest?

MSNBC: Celebrity Malibu homes threatened by fire

I guess the fire wasn’t “big” until MSNBC declared that Suzanne Somers and Sean Penn were going to lose their homes. Read it here.
UPDATE:  They have removed the Suzanne Somers reference.  I think that they were talking about the prior fire that burned her house down.  Someone must have rapidly thrown that reference into [...]

Okay, public leaders who have personal social networking site profiles, it’s time to delete them

If you’re over 30 and you have a Facebook page where you post your beach photos with silly captions, you’re bound to get yourself in professional hot water.  Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach, the President of the state-run Salisbury University in Maryland just learned this after she posted this ridiculous photo to her Facebook page with [...]

CNN: Sex offender trailer park "paradise"

This article from CNN came out of the blue.  Not much else to say other than a trailer court in St. Petersburg, FL is home to 95 convicted sex offenders out of 200 residents.  Quote: "Out there … it’s a jungle. In here, it’s our own little paradise. We’re safe here."  Wow.

Dubai’s Dolphins coming to you live from the Solomon Islands ~ We’re rich and we want dolphins!

In addition to the non-paradise Pacific article, there was another notable piece in The Age today about one of my favorite topics: Dubai.

Poverty and violence ~ the Pacific isn’t all paradise

The Age is reporting that Winston Peters, the Foreign Minister of New Zealand, painted a bleaker view of the Pacific, and the islands in particular, than many people have of the perceived paradises.  He talked about poverty, political unrest, and violence in places like Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and Tonga.  Fiji was especially noteworthy due [...]

Fake beach website ~ a national prank in the UK

“The Official Website of Porthemmet Beach” has been drawing attention in the UK.  The site calls it “The best beach in Cornwall!”  Except for the fact that it doesn’t exist.
But why would anyone think that there are warm-water beaches with coral and pods of dolphins anywhere nearby?  Maybe they don’t.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we [...]

“Land” Rush on the Seafloor ~ Oil in the Arctic Sub-bergs

There’s a “land” rush on the Arctic seabed. It’s not the newly discovered islands that are appearing from thawing, nor is it the polar bears swimming for their lives from the loss of ice. National Geographic reports that there’s oil in them thar ‘bergs, and it’s causing battles among neighboring nations such as Russian, Denmark, [...]

Reuters has an article called “Beach frolics eclipse politics in war-weary Lebanon.” Beaches will conquer all?
From the article:
